A biophilic airport in India, a timber bridge spanning a portion of New York’s High Line, and plans for a waterfront park in Newark, New Jersey, are among the ten projects recognized by AIA New York and ASLANY in its annual Transportation + Infrastructure Design Excellence Awards.
In collaboration with program partners at ASLA Illinois and AIA Austin, the two New York chapters of the professional organizations selected these final ten projects, that greatly range in scale, out of a pool of 37 submissions. The projects were reviewed by an independent jury of architects and planners.
The design awards has an allotted five categories: Open Space, Planning, Projects, Structures, and Student Work. Within these categories are different levels of recognition, such as Honors, Merits, or Citations. The Best in Competition award was dolled out to the Kempegowda International Airport Terminal 2 in Bengaluru, India. The airport terminal designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill and Grant Associates looks more like a lush indoor garden than a major transportation hub.
In addition to innovation in design, the winning projects were evaluated based on sustainability, community engagement, and civic architecture.
